Herzog & de Meuron win a master plan with a trio of residential towers in Basel

Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron has won a competition to design a new masterplan for Basel's Nordspitze area, in the northermost part Basel’s Dreispitz district, including three residential skyscrapers.


The masterplan by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron is organice around two new parks, the mixeduse community will feature three residential skyscrapers that will become the three tallest residential buildings in the city.

Three residential towers are plannedtwo at 135metrestall and one at 160 metrestallalong with a row of 30metrehigh cubic residential buildings, offering 800 apartments of a variety of sizes providing homes for 1,400 people.. A new city park will fill the space around the towers.


“The chance to work on this project is of particular significance for us. It will give us a chance to further manifest the ideas we generated together with Rémy Zaugg in “Eine Stadt im Werden?” in 1991, and our investigations in “Vision Dreispitz” in 2001.” commented Herzog & de Meuron on the announcement.

The master plan will be a collaboration between Herzog & de Meuron, the City of Basel, Switzerland's largest retail company Migros, and nonprofit public foundation Christoph Merian Stiftung, which owns the land. The project will now continue through the planning stage, with plans expected to be finalized and submitted for approval in 2020.
