Runnable Shopping Center Features 300 Meter Running Track

Who needs a gym membership when you can run for free on top of Morinomiya Q's Mall?

More often than not, people associate the act of shopping with leisure. The act of picking out clothing, trying it on and making a purchase is synonymous with a form of therapy. With iBeacon technology and new opportunities for mobile engagement between products and consumers, retail has much greater context than it did in the past.

In America, brands like Kade Spade have adapted by creating more interactive and immersive shopping mall experiences. Alternatively, in Japan, the malls themselves have been transformed to induce a multi-sensory shopping experience by encouraging patrons to workout pre- or post-purchase.

On April 27, 2015, opening its doors to fitness and shopping enthusiasts alike is Japan’s first runnable shopping mall. Curious what that even means? Osaka’s Morinomiya Q’s Mall will feature a 300 meter running track atop the mall and boast three different lanes for users. In addition, the mall includes two futsal courts (small soccer fields), all of which are available for free to the public.

Japan is synonymous with unique architecture and quirky facilities, such as tiny pods that are available for travelers to rent for just nine hours of sleep. With each facility, we see spaces with dual functionality for the purpose of travelers and locals alike to enjoy. In particular, Morinomiya Q’s Mall, an outdoor public space to promote a healthier lifestyle, will be a unique trial for Japan. Will customers actually want to break a sweat before heading to the dressing room? If anything, the new building might inspire a brand like Nike to integrate sneaker purchases for athletes into the user experience.
