Archilier Architecture won an invited competition to design two office towers on a key site in the central Guiwan District in Qianhai; a newly-developing region on Qianhai Bay on the west side of Shenzhen – an area that has been designated a new financial hub. The masterplan calls for a 240m tall office tower on Menghai Avenue, an important arterial road, with a smaller 80m tower on the adjacent block. The towers benefit from district-wide connections in the form of a linear park system with an elevated ‘skywalk’ as well as a lower-level network of retail concourses linked with the Shenzhen Metro.
Our design exhibits a dynamic fluidity in the building façade through the use of articulated vertical piers on a softly-rounded volume whose footprint grows as the tower rises. The tower skin mitigates the strong tropical sun while creating a memorable silhouette on the Qianhai skyline. Stacked vertical atria on every third floor accentuate the building’s vertical thrust and provide a small landscaped retreat for the enjoyment of office workers – a nod to Shenzhen’s character as a coastal ‘garden city’.
